Remarkable turnaround of economy in 2006 as a result of stronger tourism sector

President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom, in his presidential address during the opening of People’s Majilis for 2007 says that Maldives has achieved remarkable economic growth in 2006 as result of stronger tourism growth and support of the Government and People of the Country.
President says “This remarkable turnaround was attained as a result of the country’s main economic sector, tourism, rebounding strongly throughout 2006″. “The growth of tourism sector also had a catalytic effect on ancillary industries, and these also registered promising growth figures in 2006.”
Maldives overall economic growth slowed by a 4.6% on 2005, reflecting direct and indirect effects of Dec 2004 Tsunami in the Maldives. However, in 2006 Maldives registered economic growth of 19.1%.
National tourism growth is still on the rise and doesn’t seem to relax. Maldives Tourism registered the most number of tourists ever in a single calendar month on January 2007. Visitation in January was 64,570 compared to 63,850 in 2004 January.
